Three hundred and six British nationals applied for Cyprus citizenship in the year following the Brexit vote according to a report published in the Guardian newspaper. The number of applications is quadruple the amount of the previous year.
Dora Kostakopoulou, a professor of EU law and European integration at Warwick University, told the newspaper that the main reasons for the surge in applications was because people wanted security of residence and were seeking to retain EU citizenship rights, including the right to travel and live in the 27 countries that will remain members of the EU after the UK leaves.
The newspaper collected data from embassies in London and the interior ministries of EU countries. Answers were received from 20 countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Portugal and Belgium did not respond or sent incomplete data), which show that the largest number of applications was for Irish citizenship: 9,000 applications were made by residents of the United Kingdom and British living in Ireland during the 12 months from July 2016, the month after the referendum.
