Over 200 residents of Xylofagou took part in a peaceful protest on Sunday by blocking the motorway leading to the village. According to local media reports, the protest relates to the presence of the firing range in their community and the lack of response by the SBA authorities to what they consider to be legitimate concerns.

According to the President of the Community Council, Georgios Tasos, the Community Council decided to block the motorway for a five minute period, as a protest against the British Bases firing range. He said the Community Council had made representations through two letters sent last February and April asking for an epidemiological study and an environmental impact study to be undertaken. This relates to concerns about what he believes is an increase in the incidences of cancer in the community.

Additionally he said that the existence of the firing range is an inhibiting factor for the development of the area. He concluded by noting that if the SBA authorities do not respond, the Community's residents are ready to proceed with cutting access to the firing range.

The five minute road block was undertaken by the SBA Police.
