Fisherman working out of the small harbour at Latchi, Polis Chrysochous on Wednesday morning blocked entrance to the facility.

Speaking to reporters,  the vice-chairman of the Association of Professional Fishermen Christos Ioannou said the fishermen were protesting the way in which they are allegedly being treated by the Ports Authority since it took over the harbour 15 months ago.

“Once this was a fishing harbour that our grandfathers built with their own hands,” Ioannou told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) complaining that fishermen were not being victimised by the Ports Authority.

“We have been lisenced since the day were were born,” Ioannou said, commenting on the Authority’s efforts to crack down on unlisenced boat users.

The fishermen protest began early on Wednesday morning and is due to continue until noon.

CNA said that Polis Chrysochous Mayor Yiotis Papachristophis said the municipality had not been aware that the protest would be taking place and was not involved in any way.
