Controversial Norwegian former UN Cyprus envoy Espen Barth Eide has won a seat in his country’s new parliament.

He had run as a candidate for Norway’s centre-left Labour Party for which Sunday’s results were a disaster.

The traditional group of power in Norway ended the night as the biggest loser compared with the previous vote in 2013.

Labour was polling more than 40 per cent just two years ago but ended up with 27 per cent, its second-worst performance in the past 93 years.

The result was greeted with total silence at Labour’s election wake.

The final result marks an extraordinary success for the government –  the most rightwing elected administration in Norway’s history.
