A transformation in the heart of Larnaca's shopping centre will move a step closer next month after a twenty one year wait. Tenders are expected to be announced within weeks for the construction of the new Larnaca Municipal Market situated at the end of Ermou street. Larnaca Mayor Andreas Viras confirmed to the local Cypriot press that the only thing left is the approval of the tender documents, which is expected to be completed before the end of this month.
The old Larnaca Municipal Market was demolished in 1996 as the building was deemed inappropriate and the site has since been used for parking.
This is the second project to be implemented in Larnaca with European funding after the restoration of the municipal garden project. The new Municipal Market in Larnaca is estimated to cost in excess of five million euros and the budget will be covered entirely by Structural Funds.
According to the current plans, the new market building will include, among other things, 11 open shops built in a circular arrangement which will occupy a total area of 700sq.m. Landscaped green areas which will have a total area of approximately 1,200 sq.m. In the middle of the building there will be restaurants, small galleries and open-air exhibition areas.
The new Municipal Market will also include additional parking and according to the designs a garden with aromatic Cypriot plants and a bar area will be created on the roof of the building.
Local authorities hope that the operation of the new Municipal Market will greatly revive the city's commercial centre.
