Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot primary and secondary school children will have the opportunity to hold joint educational activities this year, in the framework of the ‘Imagine’ Educational Programme which aims to promote anti-racism and peace.

As reported by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) on Tuesday, the programme was implemented last year, on a pilot basis, for primary school children, and this year will also include secondary school pupils.

It is being implemented by the Association for Historical Dialogue & Research (AHDR) at the Home for Cooperation located in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia, and includes activities related to human rights and anti-racism, in the framework of the educational approach which promotes the culture of peace.

The programme is carried out under the auspices of the bicommunal Technical Committee on Education and has been approved by the negotiatiors of the two sides in Cyprus.

Greek Cypriot head of the Technical Committee on Education Michalinos Zembylas told CNA that the programme was implemented during the previous school year (2016-2017) on a pilot basis with the participation of groups of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot primary school children and will now include students of secondary schools as well.

Participation in the programme is voluntary, he added, both for teachers and students. He also said that each group comprises 25 Greek Cypriot and 25 Turkish Cypriot school children.

The programme is based on two pillars: 1) An anti-racism workshop at the schools and preparation of the contacts and 2) activities in the UN controlled buffer zone at Ledra Palace in Nicosia.
