The incident took place at 7.35pm as a few dozen AEK fans – including women and children – turned up at the GSZ Stadium to watch their team’s final training session ahead of their all-important Europa League game against Viktoria Plzen – which will take place some 200metres away at the AEK Arena on Thursday.

A group of 50 people – who police say were Anorthosis supporters – arrived at the GSZ Stadium wearing hoods and brandishing baseball bats. They then began hurling rocks at the AEK fans – who in turn threw rocks back.
The culprits then reportedly made their way to the Kition Arena – an indoor sports arena on the same complex as the GSZ and AEK Arena – where Anorthosis’ futsal team was playing a game against Leo Futsal Club.
Six police officers had been dispatched to the area ahead of the futsal game and training although Deputy Police Spokesperson Stelios Stylianou said they had no reports that there would be trouble.
“It appears that this group of individuals arrived prepared for violence. As soon as the violence broke out, another 15 officers were dispatched to the area to restore order. We are still investigating the incident and we are confident of movement in this case and some arrests later in the day.”
