Figures from the Aliens and Immigration Unit of the Cyprus Police show that 290 individuals have been deported from the island between January 1 and June 30 this year.

The same figures also show that police in Cyprus refused entry to foreign nationals 626 times in the first half of 2017.

Cyprus lies on the eastern limits of the European Union and is the member state closest to Syria, where the bloody civil war continues in the country as well as the Middle Eastern region in general.

The number of illegal foreigners in Cyprus currently stands at 1,755 out of which 52 are migrants that had been arrested. The number of foreigners caught residing illegal in Cyprus is said to be 700 with 959 people having requested asylum.

A total of 327 people – that had been deemed to have been residing illegally in Cyprus – have since left the island voluntarily.
