A tragic story unfolded this week after a pregnant woman died in intensive care, following a horrific car accident that occurred near the dam in the village of Hamid Mandres (Hamitkoy) in north Nicosia.
The accident occurred on Tuesday at around noon, when the car driven by the unfortunate woman, identified as 30-year-old Serife Ozer, careered off the road and rolled down a 10-metre embankment. The car then burst into flames, but the pregnant Serife – who suffered burns to her body – managed to escape, before the vehicle became engulfed in flames, according to initial reports.
Ozer was transferred to the Dr. Burhan Nalbantoglu public hospital in north Nicosia.
Doctors at the hospital were not able to save her. Operating surgeons were initially able to retrieve the baby from its mother’s womb alive. However, the infant (delivered at 31 weeks), was also not able to survive and passed away yesterday morning.
