A Cyprus Police official has confirmed that bicycle patrols will soon be marshalling the major beaches of the island following the implementation of a pilot scheme in Ayia Napa and Protaras.

The pilot scheme – which sees eight police officers donning bicycle helmets and Bermuda shorts deployed to the beaches of Ayia Napa and Protaras – has been deemed a success and other patrols will now follow suit in Paphos, Limassol and Larnaca.

“A decision had been taken earlier this year that more police patrols were needed on beaches and that is why this pilot scheme came about,” Police Spokesperson Andreas Angelides told state radio on Wednesday morning.

“We are aiming to deploy more patrols to the districts of Paphos, Limassol and Larnaca by August. These officers are there to protect and serve and I call on the public to welcome this initiative.”
