A Larnaca businessman appears to have lost close to €19,000 after hackers intercepted his payment for an online order.

The victim, who co-owns a company that rents out bio toilets, had been ordering 64 new pieces of merchandise for €40,000 and, after communicating with an overseas company, made a down payment of €18,650.

However, the 51-year-old soon realised that the e-mail communication between himself and the overseas company had been intercepted by hackers and the money sent to another account.

The Cyprus Cyber Crime Unit and Larnaca CID are still investigating.
