According to police reports, at around 6pm a message was received that a swimmer was injured after diving from a rock in the Ayia Napa sea caves. His position was worsened by the severe winds and waves that were striking the area.
Trapped in one of the caves, the police could not reach the swimmer by land nor by sea.
The Search and Rescue Coordination Centre(SRCC) in Larnaca was immediately contacted and a helicopter which was on standby was dispatched to the area.
The swimmer was rescued by the helicopter’s team and was taken to the Famagusta General Hospital to be treated. His condition is described as “out of danger”.
The SRCC issued an announcement after the incident, calling on the public to “respect and maintain safety rules and avoid entering the sea from rocky areas, particularly when severe weather conditions are present.”
