Doctors at the Near East Animal Hospital fought in vein to keep the calf alive. The calf was stillborn after its mother was transferred to an animal clinic with difficulties during labour in the village of Louroujina (Akincilar).
Veterinarian Hasan Sisman told Turkish Cypriot newspaper Kibris that he had never seen a conjoined calf before although genetic anomalies like conjoined animals have been known to occur on the island.
He added that had the mother been brought in sooner, then the calf could have survived.
“The mother could not have delivered the calf on her own as she is too small in size. She needed a major operation” explained Sisman.
He added: “The cow came in at around 11.30 at night and we were in the operating theatre until 3am. Unfortunately we could not save it”.
