The UN’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide has said that “positive movements” in the stalled Cyprus problem negotiations must be made until the summer, adding that this time a failure in the negotiations could be decisive.

Speaking to a crowd of ambassadors in Nicosia on March 10, the UN official appeared concerned about the freezing of the negotiations following a spat over a House of Representatives bill to commemorate Enosis in schools.

Eide set a deadline for progress in the talks by the summertime, appearing to take into account other developments, such as the upcoming elections in the Republic of Cyprus, or the drillings in Cyprus’ EEZ.

Rejecting Nicosia’s stated position that the key to striking a Cyprob deal is in Ankara’s hands, Eide told the foreign diplomats that it all depends on the will of the two Cyprob leaders.
