Hours after the official search and rescue efforts for missing diver Andreas Yiangou had been called off on Wednesday, news arrived of a body having been seen floating off the Limni area in Polis Chrysochous.

Sighted by a fisherman at around 4pm from the Argaka pier, the body was brought to shore by the authorities. The wetsuit on the body matched the one last worn by Andreas Yiangou. Relatives of Yiangou who arrived on the scene confirmed that it was indeed him.

The body was then taken to Paphos General Hospital for further examination.

Yiangou, 31, had been missing since Saturday morning after going spearfishing off the coast of Pomos in the Paphos region.

According to camera footage on some of his equipment that was found, Yiangou appeared to strike a big fish but then struggled to surface again and, presumably lost consciousness.

Despite the decision of the Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordination Centre to pull out of the search by Wednesday, groups of volunteers continued to comb the area around the remote Pomos and Tillyria region.
