This is the first time that fixing of sports events is deemed as a felony, as bribing and acceptance of a bribery in order to fix a sports event will be considered a statutory offense.
According to the bill, offenders will be sentenced to five years in prison and €100,000 fine. The bill has been prepared by the Ministry of Justice and will be presented to the House by the end of the month. The bill also prohibits athletes, teams’ and sports federations’ officials from distributing confidential information regarding the teams.
The bill also allows authorities to access telecommunication data and accounts in an investigation of an allegedly fixed game.
