The Water Development Department is pleased with the recent inflow at Cyprus’ dams even though levels remain lower than in January last year.

Speaking to state radio on Monday, Water development official Faidros Roussis said the island’s dams and reservoirs were at 23.7% of their capacity, compared to 37.6% on January 9, 2016.

However, Asprokremmos dam had overflowed on Sunday.

“There has been a good start to the month and we believe things will improve further in the coming days”.

The renewed optimism following steady rainfall and the expectation of melting snow contributing to water store comes amid efforts to get the Paphos district a working desalination unit.

The Agriculture Ministry is speeding up efforts to call tenders for a desalination unit in Paphos, particularly after coming under fire over apparent attempts to by-pass regular procedures and use an existing but defunct unit.
