A Russian resident of Yermasoyia left her home for less than three hours and returned to find €400,000 in cash missing from her safe.

According to police, the 39-year-old woman was away from home between 4.30pm and 7pm on Tuesday during which time the burglars entered her house by breaking through a sliding door.

They then located and broke into the safe, which was attached to the wall and concealed inside a cupboard. A similar safe next to the first one and which contained jewellery, was left untouched.

Although the house did have an alarm system, it was not activated at the time of the break-in. However, a CCTV system did capture the burglars on tape.

Investigations into the burglary continued on Wednesday.
