Whilst the overwhelming majority of purchases will be trouble free, you may be wondering what your consumer rights are in Cyprus if something does go wrong. What can you do, if something that you purchased in Cyprus, subsequently turns out to be faulty?
We have detailed below some updated information that you may find helpful:
What guarantee do I get when purchasing a product in Cyprus?
New Goods - Free of charge 2-year guarantee (legal guarantee)
Second Hand Goods - Free of charge 1-year guarantee (legal guarantee)
NB: Goods purchased from private individuals or at public auctions are excluded from the above.
"According to the Cyprus Law (EU harmonised) you always have the right to a minimum 2-year guarantee at no cost for new products and the right to a minimum 1 year guarantee at no cost for second hand goods. This guarantee is your minimum right."
If a shop sells you a new product more cheaply on a ‘no guarantee' basis, this only means that you don't have any additional protection. You always have the right to a two-year guarantee free of charge if the product turns out to be faulty or not as advertised.
What if I bought the goods online?
"You have the right to return online / distance purchases within 14 days for a full refund. You can do so for any reason – even if you simply changed your mind."
"The "cooling off" period expires 14 days after the day you received your goods. If this period expires on a non-working day, your deadline is extended till the next working day. You must unequivocally inform the trader of your decision to cancel the purchase, It is not enough to just send the goods back. You must send the unused goods back within 14 days of informing the trader."
NB: The 14-day "cooling off" period does not apply to a small number of items and covers purchases from companies.
What if the product is faulty?
"If goods you bought in Cyprus turn out to be faulty or do not look or work as advertised, the seller must repair or replace them free of charge or give you a price reduction or a full refund.
You will only be able to ask for a partial or full refund when it is not possible to repair or replace the goods."
How do I get products repaired, replaced or refunded?
For items that were purchased new "the 2-year guarantee period starts as soon as you receive your goods.
If you are returning the item within 6 months of its receipt, then you simply need to show the trader that the goods are faulty or not as advertised.
However, after 6 months you need to prove that the defect already existed on receipt of the goods, for example, by showing that it is due to the poor quality of the materials used."
What can I do if a trader won't help?
If you have tried to return a faulty item and the trader refuses to acknowledge your consumer rights then you should report them using the Consumer Protection Service's Online Complaint Form or by calling the Consumer Helpline on 1429.
The Cyprus Consumer Protection Service lists information for consumers, including your rights, in easy to read online guides which cover a variety of issues.
