There will be another public holiday next week, when the Republic of Cyprus celebrates Ochi Day, on Friday 28th October 2022.

The day marks the anniversary of when the Greek leader, Ioannis Metaxas, rejected the ultimatum made by Italian dictator Mussolini on October 28th 1940. When Mussolini asked if Axis forces could use Greek territory to gain access to areas of Europe not already occupied by Hitler and Mussolini, Metaxas said ‘No!’

Prime Minister Metaxas had deliberately done his best to keep Greece neutral in the early months of World War II, but the ultimatum changed that position and Greece became allied with Britain.

Ochi Day, sometimes known as Ohi or Oxi Day, is celebrated throughout Greece, Cyprus and the Greek communities around the world on October 28th each year.

As is usual with this public holiday a number of parades and church services will be held across Cyprus.

Many businesses in Cyprus, but not all, will be closed, whilst banks and government offices will not be open.
