Cyprus marks one of the most important days in the Greek Orthodox calendar today, the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos (“Dekapentavgoustos”). Also referred to as the Assumption or Feast of the Assumption, it commemorates the death, resurrection and glorification of Christ's mother.
It is one of the most important dates in the church's calendar, after Easter & Christmas. It is considered a day, not of mourning, but a celebration of joy for the union of the mother with her son and follows a period of fasting. Churches across the island will hold services to mark the occasion.
In Cyprus, the day is marked with religious services and events, plus family gatherings & BBQ's. Thousands of people also try to escape the August heat and head for the mountains for a BBQ/picnic in a long held tradition.
As a public holiday, it also means that banks will be closed, as will government offices. In addition, most general stores/supermarkets & businesses, but not all, will be closed for the day.
Reminder: Public holiday in Cyprus today
