Erdogan expected in northern Cyprus

The government of Cyprus has described the Turkish president’s planned visit to northern Cyprus, an area occupied by Turkey, as an unprecedented provocation.

Tayipp Erdogan will visit the north on Sunday to mark the 37th anniversary of the unilateral proclamation of independence.

However, despite the celebrations, only Turkey recognises the enclave.

The Turkish president is expected to have lunch in Varosha, near Famagusta – an area which has been that has been uninhabited since 1974, but was opened last month by Turkish authorities.
