General Makriyannis (Note: one of the leading figures of the 1821 Greek national independence struggle) learned to write as he said himself at an advanced age so that he could write his memoirs. From the very first lines of his text, he explains that he learned to write in order to tell the truth. But the truth, he continues, is bitter. Those who harmed the country don’t like it when the truth is revealed about their actions because they both sought to do harm and to see their interests served, as well as wanting us to call them good patriots, something which is impossible.
