Cyprus police have announced that they have prepared and will implement a specific action plan, covering the 14th to 19th August, to address the increased needs of the holiday period.

Police will deal with the heavy traffic expected over the next few days with extra patrols, traffic control measures and strict implementation of the law on traffic violations to help minimise road accidents. Special attention will be given to offences relating to driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and dangerous overtaking, failure to wear a seat belt or helmet and dangerous/negligent driving

Drivers are urged to be particularly cautious and patient when driving and adhere to road traffic laws to prevent traffic collisions.

The statement added: "Due to the increased incidence of burglaries and theft, which are observed every year during this period, the police are also taking measures to protect and secure citizens and their property." Extra patrols both vehicular and on foot will take place in urban and rural areas to prevent crime against properties, such as burglaries, thefts and robberies. In addition, increased measures will be taken in places of public transit such as busy shopping streets, crowded places and resorts, with the aim of preventing and combating all forms of illegality.

In conjunction with the measures taken by the police, the public are asked to take their own measures, both for their own security and for the protection of their property. Reiterating the advice to all those who may be away from home to take preventative steps in order to keep their properties safe. Historically this holiday period is considered high risk for burglaries and theft since criminal elements take advantage of the absence of people from their homes.
