THE RESULTS of the weekend’s local elections in Turkey suggested that the authoritarian rule of President Tayyip Erdogan has failed to crush democracy. The coalition of his AKP party with the nationalist MHP lost the country’s major cities, even though the result in Istanbul, which the former prime minister Binali Yildirim won by some 14,000 votes, has been challenged.
