It’s nearly that time of year again when the clocks go back for winter, giving people an extra hour in bed, in a practice that will soon be coming to an end for EU countries.
Clocks in Cyprus will turn back one hour at 4am on Sunday 28th October 2018, marking the official end of summer time and the start of winter time.
Last month, the European Union announced they will scrap the twice-yearly seasonal clock change across the bloc from October 2019, leaving member states to decide by April whether they will stick permanently to summer or winter time.
The decision to abandon this practice comes after a public consultation revealed that 84% of 4.6 million EU citizens surveyed support ditching the practice with opponents saying that it wastes time and causes unnecessary confusion.
The last EU-wide DST period will start on Sunday, March 31, 2019 - each member state would then have the chance to decide if they stay on 'summer time' (DST) year-round or change their clocks once more on Sunday, October 27, 2019.
