Hundreds of drivers booked during police campaigns

Members of various police divisions conducted coordinated operations in the district of Nicosia and on motorways and suburban roads nationwide over recent days according to announcements by police.

Nationwide from Friday morning until Saturday morning a total of 440 drivers were reported for speeding violations, while 376 other drivers were reported for various road traffic offences that included 78 drivers reported for driving while using a mobile phone.

In addition police members carried out 249 alcohol checks on drivers - a total of 37 were reported after being found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

In a separate campaign in Nicosia and surrounding areas between Saturday and Sunday a total of 278 drivers were reported for various traffic offences  as police continued measures to prevent and reduce serious and fatal road accidents.

Specifically 170 drivers were reported for speeding with a further 83 reported for various other driving offences such as not wearing a helmet, not wearing a seat belt, using a mobile phone while driving and running red lights. In addition a total of 25 drivers were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

During these checks an 18-year-old who was riding a moped on a road in the Latsia area was stopped and searched by police officers. He was found to be in possession of cocaine weighing 3.5 grams, dry hemp plant material weighing 5 grams together with precision weighing scales. The 18-year-old was given a roadside narcotest and the preliminary results indicated that he was riding under the influence of drugs.

A small amount of cannabis was found in the possession of a driver who was stopped on a road in the area of ​​Aglantzia. This driver was also given a roadside narcotest and again the preliminary results indicated that he was driving under the influence of drugs.

Another driver was found to be in possession of an offensive weapon after a search of their vehicle uncovered a wooden bat.

The police announcement stated that coordinated actions by the police continue on a daily basis as part of efforts to prevent serious and fatal road traffic accidents.
