With Autumn upon us the next public holiday is just days away.
The Republic of Cyprus will celebrate the 58th anniversary since the declaration of its independence on Monday 1st October 2018. As is usual with this public holiday you can expect to see military & student parades across the island. Residents will enjoy the long weekend with banks, offices, schools and many shops closed on the Monday.
Later in the month, on Sunday 28th October, there will be another public holiday this time to celebrate Ochi Day. The day marks the anniversary of the day the Greek leader Ioannis Metaxas rejected the ultimatum made by Italian dictator Mussolini on October 28 1940, when he demanded that Axis forces to enter Greek territory and occupy certain unspecified "strategic locations" or otherwise face war.
Ochi Day is celebrated throughout Greece, Cyprus and the Greek communities around the world.
A recent survey by the UK based company Esri has shown that Cyprus (along with Slovakia) have 15 bank holidays, more than any other EU country. England and Wales have eight bank holidays, the fewest among the EU bloc.
Greece, Malta and Lithuania are in second place with 14 bank holidays, followed with Austria, Portugal and Slovenia with 13.
Reminder: Public Holiday on the way
