Paphos dog owners were yesterday urged to ensure that their dogs are registered and they have the relevant dog licence in an announcement by the Municipality of Paphos. In addition owners were warned that fines would be imposed on those that failed to meet their obligations.

The announcement continued: "On the occasion of the recent tragic incident of a Bulgarian woman's death, the Municipality of Paphos recalls the provisions of the relevant legislation and stresses the need for immediate compliance by owners."

It was noted in the announcement that there are around 480 dogs currently registered out of an estimated 1,500 dogs in the area.

The municipality stated that it was intensifying efforts to register dogs and urged citizens to respond immediately "to avoid unnecessary costs and possible unpleasant situations".

For registration the standard procedure is that a dog is taken to a vets to be microchipped, then the vet either registers the dog’s microchip number and owner details in the Veterinary Services database, or gives the owner the microchip’s info and they register the data at the District Veterinary Services office. After the microchip is installed and data registered, the owner is given a registration certificate from the vet or the Veterinary Services office to take to the local authorities to issue the dog licence.
