Ayia Napa municipality has started a campaign to remove non-compliant billboards and signs from the roofs of buildings and streets of the town.
After a decision by the Municipal Council, the Municipality of Ayia Napa announced that it has started to remove all billboards that are located on pillars or posts on public pavements. In addition billboards on roofs of buildings that do not meet height restrictions and are vertically mounted on buildings are being removed.
The Municipality of Ayia Napa states that only billboards that are completely adjacent to the facades of buildings, with limited size and dimensions, as well as signs on roofs with a maximum height of 1.20m from the roof will be permitted.
In a statement Ayia Napa Mayor, Mr Yiannis Karousos, stressed that the municipality has started this campaign very strongly this year, aiming at the removal of all the signs that cause pollution of the town. He also noted that beyond the campaign, no license will be issued this year if there is no approval on the issue of billboards by the municipality. That is why he added "we urge citizens and businesses to contact the municipality to get information on the specifications that will be allowed."
"Visual pollution, according to the recently completed tourism strategy, is one of the biggest problems that we have to solve." concluded Karousos.
In order to display any advertisements, businesses need to obtain a licence from the local municipal council. The specific eligibility criteria and restrictions are set by each municipality.
