A 48yr old Limassol man who was convicted of the repeated sexual abuse of his step daughter was sentenced by Limassol District Court to a prison term of just 18 months on Friday.

The man had been found guilty on five counts of abusing the child from the age of ten over a period of four years.

The girl also complained about the inaction of her mother, fully aware of the abuse that was taking place in the family home, she did nothing to protect her.

The mother admitted her guilt during the hearing and was sentenced to nine months imprisonment.

The offences came to light a year ago when the girl, then 14yrs old, fled to the Limassol Police and reported the assaults. According to the girl's testimony her stepfather committed horrific acts against her, she was indecently assaulted and forced into a sexual act with him.

Imposing the sentence the court highlighted the seriousness of the offence committed by the accused while stressing the need for a penalty that would act as a deterrent for such offences, especially when committed against minors.

It should be noted that the man had been held in custody since the initial complaint was made meaning that with time served this child abuser will be released in a matter of months.

Given the case involved the repeated abuse of a child, starting at ten years old, over a period of four years, it is unclear how such a lenient sentence is any form of deterrent.
