Popular Cyprus resort, Ayia Napa, will see the installation of CCTV cameras in the main square and surrounding streets next year. The new system will be connected directly to Ayia Napa Police Station and is expected to be operational in time for the summer 2018 season.
Speaking at a presentation of the Neighbourhood Watch scheme which is due to be implemented in Ayia Napa, the Justice and Public Order Minister, Ionas Nicolaou, said that when the cameras are installed and the new members of the police recruited then policing in the tourist areas of Famagusta will be clearly strengthened compared to previous years.
The installation of security cameras in central locations outside of Cyprus has led to a reduction in crimes such as anti-social behaviour, vandalism, theft, burglary etc. The supply & installation phase of the project is currently out to tender with the contract to be awarded shortly.
In addition to the above the Minister gave more information regarding the centralised alarm system that is currently being implemented.
He explained that the centralised alarm system "will connect the alarm system installed in your premises with the Police, so that the Police response time is much less than the time required today, which will act as a deterrent to crime".
He suggested that the combination of CCTV, extra police officers, centralised alarm system and the new Neighbourhood Watch scheme will lead to safer area.
