The case of Billy the little dog who suffered severe injuries resulting in death in 2014 headed to the Supreme Court today.

The Attorney-general filed an appeal in 2015 at the Famagusta district court against the acquittal of the two suspects who were tried and acquitted of the torture and death of Billy.

The attack on Billy, in Pernera in 2014, caused a wave of protests with hundreds of people calling for better animal rights and policing escalating to the point of President Nicos Anastasiades intervening while he was in Brussels promising to clampdown on the issue.

The Animal Party Cyprus (APC) issued the following statement:
"The Animal Party Cyprus informs that on Thursday 9 November 2017 at 9:00 am the hearing of the case of the death of the small dog Billy (July 4, 2014) begins at the Supreme Court.

We recall that Billy's brutal abuse (which resulted in his death) occurred in Ayia Napa in 2014.

From the post mortem, the conclusion was that the death of unfortunate Billy was caused by cerebral hemorrhage as a result of severe injury at the base of the skull (Billy was cast alive in a carton crushing machine).

After a lengthy hearing, the two defendants (who denied guilt) were held innocent (9/12/2015) in all the accusations they were facing concerning the death of the animal. After the court ruling, the Animal Party Cyprus disagreed because there were several questions and ambiguities.

On 17/5/2015, the Animal Party Cyprus after a delegation meeting with the Attorney General, Mr Costas Clerides, had handed him a memorandum and asked to examine the case to appeal the decision of the District Court of Famagusta.

The Attorney General had announced on 18/12/2015 that in criminal case 4153/14 of the District Court of Famagusta, an appeal was filed against the decision and received a number 3/16 Criminal Appeal.

The Animal Party Cyprus will be attending the Supreme Court where the hearing begins, chaired by the President of the Supreme Court, Mr M.Nikolatos. "
